Murphy’s law: You post the class teachers and within a week, things change!
A huge congratulations to Mr Declan Welsh who has secured a permanent teaching position in the Junior School at Marist College Canberra. We thank Declan for his work, commitment and dedication over the past three years and wish him well.
An updated staff list will be distributed in the next few weeks when we finalise teaching staff.
It is also with great sadness….for us anyway….. that Mrs Joan Jones has decided to retire at the end of the school year.
Joan’s letter to me says:
“It is with a heavy heart; I tender my resignation from Good Shepherd Primary School….I have loved every moment at this beautiful school (the best school in the Archdiocese!) but it is time for me to hand over the reins, icepacks and band aids to someone else who will love the children, staff, parents and community.
It is time for me to enjoy the next stage of my life with my beautiful husband, girls and grandchildren.’
Joan Jones has been the ‘Front Office Lady’ since 2002! She is a foundation staff member and has worked with four Principals, hundreds of staff members, thousands of students and parents. She is ‘the heart of God in Amaroo’ and will be greatly missed. I estimate she has assisted over 100 000 sickbay referrals and enrolled over 2000 students. She is the face of the school: her welcoming, happy demeanour will be missed. Many parents do not understand the amount of work she does to support everyone in our community behind the scenes.
Unsurprisingly, Joan does not want a farewell: but we will have an opportunity to say a few words to her at our Christmas Carols evening and End of Year Mass.
She won’t miss her daily commute from her home in Boorowa, but I know she will miss everyone and this school which has been a huge part of her life.
Morning Drop Off
More and more students arriving well before the 8:30am supervision time. This morning, we had students sitting in the courtyard area before 8am! Obviously, parents walking past dropping off their children after 8am to ‘TeamKids’ have every right to question me about why these students can not attend before school care when their children do.
It is also unfair on our staff who then must supervise these students.
Our rules and policies about drop-off, pick-up, car-parking, etc are for the safety of our students. Please support us in ensuring you follow the policies of the school. These are non-negotiable for the safety and well-being of students and staff.
I will be contacting parents who drop their child to school before 8:30am next week and discussing whether before-school care or a later drop-off is your decision. Please work out alternative arrangements if your child must be here before 8:30am (www.teamkids.com.au).
Thank you for your support and understanding.
A huge thank you to the parents who coordinated our Talent Show last week. This was the culmination of many weeks of work and the concert was just magnificent! The students who participated were just brilliant and this was a great opportunity to showcase the ‘talent’ we have at GS!
Thanks Carla, Penny, Kristin, Shade and Kelly for your work with this. Very much appreciated.
Gabriele (6T) has been selected as one of the goal keepers for the U12 ACT Futsal Squad to play at the FFA National Futsal Championships held in Canberra in January 2020.
2020 School Fees
The 2020 School Fee Information Pack will be sent home this afternoon via the class notebag.
Parents please make sure you read the information included and return the yellow form as soon as possible.
Prayer Celebration and Thank You Volunteers Assembly
Just a reminder that the Prayer Celebration, led by 2 Huleatt and 2 Welsh, will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2pm. This will also be an opportunity to thank our parents who have volunteered their time this year too. The ‘Humble Achiever’s Award’, our annual award presented to a long serving volunteer of the Good Shepherd Community in memory of Melissa Dunbar, will also be presented. Melissa dedicated many years of service at Good Shepherd. She was instrumental in organising many fundraising and community building events. The intent of the award is to recognise humble, enthusiastic and supportive volunteers that provide generous service over time.
We encourage you to attend our ceremony in the hall tomorrow.
Suddenly we’re heading towards the final weeks of November. I hope we don’t find ourselves galloping towards the end of the school year without some time for thoughtful reflection. You would be aware that this time of year sees many things coming into place, not only bringing a settled conclusion to the current year but also in preparing for the year ahead. Enjoy the bustle but remember to rest and reflect.
Our final Kindergarten Orientation session will be held next Thursday, 28 November. We are really looking forward to welcoming back our pre-schoolers ready for the start of ‘big school’ in 2020.
Last day of 2019
A reminder the last day of Term 4 is THURSDAY, 19 December.
Wishing God’s blessing on you and your families,
Tomorrow, Friday 22 November, students from 2Huleatt and 2Welsh will be leading the school in prayer bringing our school focus 'Family: The Joy of Love' to an end. We will also be celebrating all our special volunteers at this prayer celebration and invite all families to join us in the school hall at 2pm to celebrate.
Mini Vinnies Food Pantry
A big thank you to all families who have donated food to the Vinnines Food pantry. Congratulations to 4 Rous who won the Class Collector Award this week!
Around Christmas time, students from Good Shepherd are given the opportunity to donate items towards Christmas hampers for those in need in Gungahlin. This year each class will be allocated an item to bring in.
On Saturday 14th December, members of the Gungahlin Vinnies Conference will be putting the hampers together before being sent out that weekend. We are looking for volunteers from the school community to come and help pack the hampers. If you are able to come give a hand, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Children are welcome to come and help too.
Vinnies Doorknock Appeal
February is the month for the Vinnies Doorknock Appeal. In 2020, Good Shepherd will be collecting on Saturday 15th February. We are looking for lots of volunteers to doorknock in the Amaroo and Bonner areas.
Come along and meet other ADF partners and strengthen your support network while you manage the home front. It’s a great opportunity to meet the local DCO team and learn about the support and programs available in a relaxed social environment. Kids are welcome at this self-funded activity.
Register through Eventbrite no later than Sunday, 24 November.
