Dear parents and carers,
Thank you for a wonderful Term 3!
As we prepare for the start of the new term, we kindly remind parents and students to ensure that uniforms are in good condition and ready for the first day of school on Monday 14th October. We move into wearing full summer uniform from the first day of Term 3. Here are a few important points to check:
- uniform condition - Please ensure that all items of the uniform are clean, neat, and in good repair;
- shoes - footwear should be in good condition, polished, and appropriate for school wear; and
- no coloured braids - please remember that coloured braids are not part of the school uniform.
If you need any additional uniform items, the school’s Clothing Pool will be open in the school holidays. For dates and times, please see the Community Council section below, as well as our social media platforms.
I also want to take this opportunity to thank everyone for a wonderful term filled with learning, growth, and community spirit here at Good Shepherd. Have a restful and enjoyable break, and we look forward to welcoming everyone back refreshed and ready for the new term ahead!

Last week’s Mass Gospel reading (Mark 9:30-37) and homily reminded us that we should all be striving for greatness.
A wise person once said: “Strive NOT to be the BEST IN THE WORLD but to be the BEST FOR THE WORLD.”
This is exactly what Jesus asks of his disciples and indeed, each of us! When the disciples are arguing over which of them is the greatest disciple, Jesus sets them straight by reinforcing that God is all about being the best for others and making a genuinely positive difference in the world, bringing others to God’s saving grace and eternal salvation. Jesus reminded the disciples that if they were not following the New Commandment and loving God with all their hearts and their neighbour as themselves, then they were failing at being the greatest.
Let us pray together:
Merciful, generous and ever-loving Lord
Help us to see, value and appreciate the greatness in each of us. Motivate and empower us to see your image in those we encounter every day and to show them the love and compassion that we would show you. Guide us to cater to the human dignity of every person and celebrate everyone’s invaluable worth. Let us live wisely, humbly, compassionately, generously and with a just and merciful heart. Let us put the needs of others before ourselves as Jesus put our needs before his own.
Amen.
During the holidays we invite you to deepen your personal and communal relationship with God by praying Christian Mediation as a family.
Christian Meditation in Schools – The Benefits
(All information is sourced from the Christian Meditation in Schools: Evidence of the Benefits document from Centre for Children and Young People, Southern Cross University and The World Community for Christian Meditation.)
Meditation is a universal spiritual wisdom and practice central to all of the great religious traditions.
Scientific research shows that practising meditation offers many potential benefits to children, including clinical improvements in mental and physical health, as well as strengthening emotional and behavioural regulation, stress management and concentration. This is evidenced in recent research conducted in schools in both Australia and Ireland.
Key take aways:
Christian Meditation: -
- IMPROVES: attention, mindfulness and cognitive function;
- REDUCES: depression, anxiety, stress; and
- CREATES: a safe, respectful ‘space’ for nurturing children’s spiritual growth.
The stillness and silence helps to create a space where children are open to the presence of God. This:
- helps strengthen children’s relationship with God; and
- offers a sense of personal agency in spirituality which can renew faith.
In turn, the research shows Christian meditation also helps children become more aware and accepting of themselves and others as it:
- supports identity formation and self-acceptance;
- increases kindness towards others;
- fosters a sense of community;
- awakens the heart;
- deepens self-awareness;
- nourishes the Spirit; and
- inspires more authentic living.

Keeping kids safe online these holidays
With the holidays just around the corner, your children might be spending more time online for entertainment and to connect with their friends. As a parent or carer, you can help them have safe and positive experiences online. Have a conversation with your child today about how to stay safe online and to deal with online safety issues like cyberbullying, inappropriate content or unwanted contact.
The eSafety Commissioner (eSafety.gov.au) has lots of great advice and resources for parents and carers to help keep young people safe online.
