Dear parents and carers,
Holy Week and Easter
This week we enter Holy Week, a most solemn week in the Catholic tradition commemorating Jesus' last week on earth and the events leading up to his resurrection on Easter Sunday. Around the fifteenth century, Christians began the practice of prayerfully meditating on the Passion of Christ by reproducing that pilgrimage in miniature in what eventually became known as the Stations of the Cross. We have recreated this ‘mini pilgrimage’ for our students so they too, can prayerfully reflect on the Passion of Christ, which they have been doing this week either in classes or in the Church. I wish you all a safe and prayerful Easter long weekend.
Community Council
All schools need volunteer parents and carers to help us and guide us to ensure we are doing the best possible job for your children. We welcome any interested members of our community to join us as we commence with our new Community Council structure and as we journey with you in the coming years. Please contact Adriana.hindson@cg.catholic.edu.au for further information.
End of day pick up at the front of the school
Thank you for your attention to this. Pick up is a very difficult time for effective supervision, and we need all parents and carers to follow the procedures. We must ensure all members of our community are always safe. Please see the below diagram for clarification:
- blue stars - if collecting your child on foot please park your car in a designated space and collect your child at the gate. Please do not park on the dirt barriers or in the keep clear parking bays. Parking in these areas blocks visibility for students crossing the carpark to their parked vehicle, and prevents emergency services from accessing the building or the oval in the event of an emergency;
- at 3:10pm staff will ensure all students to be collected by car are sitting down behind the blue line (left of the green arrow in the below diagram);
- staff on gate duty wait at the gate and ensure students exit with a parent or carer;
- we ask parents and carers who collect their children on foot, to leave as quickly as possible to enable the carpark to be clear of pedestrians by 3:20pm;
- red arrows - parents in cars are requested to continue in a circular movement in the carpark whilst waiting for the gates to open at 3:20pm. Do not wait at the orange star as it blocks all traffic;
- orange star - staff move the cones that block the driveway at 3:20pm;
- green arrow - once the barricade is moved, follow the green arrow to collect your child. Staff on duty assist students in entering their car and assist with directing traffic to ensure safety;
- green arrow - parents are asked to move as far down the car line as possible to keep the traffic flowing;
- at 3:30pm (when supervision is finished), all remaining students who have not been collected will go to the front office where parents or emergency contacts will be called; and
- please be aware that the school day does not finish for staff at 3:30pm. We have meetings to attend and appreciate timely collection of your children. There is an after school care option with TeamKids if timely collection is not possible.
Good wishes for the week
Trazel
This week, as a school, we celebrated Holy Week. It is one of the most significant weeks in the Church’s liturgical Year.
Holy Week begins with Palm Sunday where Jesus entered into Jerusalem on a donkey. On Palm Sunday Jesus is worshipped and celebrated. People lay down their coats on the road so that the donkey Jesus rides into town on is not dusty. They wave palm leaves at Jesus in Jubilant celebration.
We move from Palm Sunday to Jesus’ visit to the Temple to The Last Supper on Holy Thursday where Jesus shared his last ever meal with his friends during the Passover Meal. He blessed, broke and shared bread. Jesus also blessed and shared wine. He asked his disciples and friends to “Do this in memory of him.”
Jesus then goes to the Garden of Gethsemane to pray. His Disciples come with him though they are unable to stay awake and support Jesus through these dark hours. They sleep while Jesus prays to his Father in heaven.
On Good Friday Judas leads the soldiers to Jesus in the Garden. He betrays Jesus with a kiss to identify who Jesus is to the soldiers. The soldiers seize and arrest Jesus and take him off to Pontius Pilate.
Jesus is tried and found guilty. Pontius Pilate could clearly see that Jesus was innocent, but he was too afraid of the religious leaders and of the large crowd who had started to revolt – demanding the prisoner Barabbas be set free, leaving Jesus, the prisoner to be condemned to die.
Let us pray together as a school community:
Loving Lord, see me for who I am, accept and have mercy on my faults. Bless me during this Holy Week and give me the grace, strength, and courage to run towards you. May I feel my faith renews and my heart made new with the hope Easter brings. Amen.
We wish our Good Shepherd families a safe, restful, joyful, and blessed Easter long weekend. May you each enjoy some wonderful quality time with God, friends and family.
Today is our big CAN challenge. Thank you so much – all families have so kindly and so generously donated cans in for the challenge, and importantly, to support families in need within the Gungahlin area. Next week we will be able to let you know the total number of cans donated.
