Good afternoon everyone
I hope you are enjoying this beautiful cold weather!
Only 2 Monday's to go!!!!!
Have a great week.
Tonight, I will be participating in the CEO Sleepout, to raise awareness of homelessness and the work St Vincent de Paul do in Canberra to assist. In a few hours I will receive a palpable, purposeful and poignant encounter with the cardboard and concrete reality of homelessness.
Unfortunately, homelessness in our community continues to grow.
Thankfully, Vinnies was – and is – there for those in need.
Vinnies offers relevant and practical support for people experiencing homelessness. Whether it’s a bed for a safe, restful night’s sleep, medical treatments to get their health back on track, or a computer to look for employment opportunities.
Last week, we held our annual ‘Winter Woollies’ Day and there were so many ‘winter woollies’ donated they could not all fit in the Vinnies night Patrol Van!! Thank you! We also raised over $1200 which has gone towards my sponsorship for the CEO Sleepout. Thank you so much for your generosity.
My current fund-raising effort is sitting just shy of $5000…which is a credit to this community. Feel free to throw in a few dollars if you haven’t…or pass on to friends or family… https://www.ceosleepout.org.au/fundraisers/david-austin/canberra
As a member of the Vinnies Night Patrol Van, I can tell you, firsthand, the plight of homelessness in our city. Money raised will assist Vinnies with their work.
I will do regular updates tonight from the CEO Sleepout on Facebook…. -4C tonight!
To keep you informed with what is happening regarding our building refurbishments:
- ‘C Building’ is progressing and should be completed mid-late Term 3. Once completed, we will be down a couple of classrooms for a few months whilst the other block ( F Building) is refurbished;
- F Building will be vacated when completion of ‘C Building’ is complete. Year 3 will move into the new refurbished ‘C Block, along with 2 Huleatt and 2 Welsh;
- 5DD and 5 Kelly will be together in the Year 6 breakout space;
- Italian and STEM will visit classrooms for their lessons rather than have their own space;
- Construction of under-cover walkways will commence in the front of the ‘McGrath Building’ (B Building) during the holidays and will continue for the first two weeks of Term 2. There will be some disruption around this space during this time.
Building and refurbishment is inconvenient for us, but the builders are planning this to be as least disruptive as possible. Thanks for your understanding during this process.
The whole school should be completed by early 2020.
Community Council Meeting
Last Tuesday, the Community Council met for our monthly meeting. The first part of the meeting was an ‘Open Meeting’. During this time, the issue of recycling bottles for the ‘ACT Container Deposit Scheme’ at Good Shepherd was raised by a very articulate and confident student! Purchasing bins for this purpose, educating students and the environmental and financial benefits of the scheme were presented to the Council. We agreed this was a fantastic initiative for our school and will be introduced next term.
Main items discussed at our Council meetings on Tuesday were:
- Building project
- School buses issue affecting families
- Communication protocols for the school
- Canteen kitchen refurbishment
- Hall foyer refurbishment
The Community Council are currently investigating refurbishing the School Hall foyer and constructing storage in this space. The CC are also interested in erecting bollards (like Amaroo School) at the front of the school to prevent parking on the grass area.
We are wondering if anyone in our community are architects/draftsman interested in drawing some pictures for our hall refurbishment?
Also, wondering if anyone is in the landscaping/construction game that could install bollards for our school?
Please contact me directly if you can assist.
We have completed a Uniform blitz this week and I have personally reminded all students about wearing the correct school uniform. The vast majority of students are complying, and I thank them and their parents for supporting us.
- Navy socks (not white) for the normal winter uniform;
- Navy jackets, navy beanies, navy scarves and navy gloves only;
- Black leather school shoes (not black sneakers);
- School bags only (with Good Shepherd Logo);
- Predominantly white sneakers for sport uniform.
A reminder please not to purchase uniform items from ‘Chilada’ in Mitchell. They are producing our uniform (and logo) without our permission and many of the items they are selling are not ‘uniform’.
Wishing God’s blessing on you and your families,

Our Stars of the Week!!!!
National Peace Project
In this, the Centenary of the Year of Peace, our school has been invited to join other schools for a historic National Peace Project at the Australian War Memorial to celebrate the Centenary of Peace Day (19 July, 1919) and help us make a giant peace poppy on the Forecourt. Six children from Good shepherd have been chosen to sing on the steps of the War Memorial and represent our school. This will be filmed and used for educational purposes in the War Memorial. This is a great experience for those children.
